Inspired by 'The Lamberhurst Book of Remembrance' by Barbara Uren, Vivian Pedley's exhibition takes a poignant look at the futility of war.
The 14 portraits of Lamberhurst's fallen are each drawn in 18 minutes to reflect the brevity of their lives, but these lives are further exposed in the installation: a child’s boots wait patiently but hopelessly by a swing for a returning father; a deserted gravediggers scene is complete with discarded tools and cigarettes by a grave of autumnal poppies. The portraits and installation combine to create a powerful, emotive exhibition that is unafraid to confront the abandonment of humanity.
Portraits can be viewed in the tea room and main house, whilst the installation and further portraits can be found in the Old Castle. Entry to the tea room is free, but National Trust Admission charges apply to the main house and Old Castle.
